Clowns. These heavily made-up and ridiculously costumed people are supposed to bring joy and laughter to whomever they come across. As of lately, though, no one finds clowns funny. It all started in South Carolina where a child claimed to have been approached by a clown trying to lure him into the woods; now there have been clown sightings up and down the east coast as well as some other states.

I find this whole situation utterly stupid and ridiculous. This is just another one of those moral panics that I refuse to be a part of. The media is the main instigator of the clown phenomenon because the news is reporting information that deliberately generates concern, anxiety, and panic. Not only do our oh-so-reliable newscasters propagate the panic, but normal people like you and I are just as guilty. Why is that? I’ve seen so many posts on Facebook expressing fear of the “local” clowns. Why are we paying any attention to this nonsense? By giving these perps media coverage we are exacerbating the problem. The problem is that people are desperate for attention and by continually talking about the clowns, we are giving them the attention they don’t deserve. It’s not worth our time or energy to give these hooligans any sort of satisfaction. Stop making it a big deal!

I’m sure everyone on campus has heard rumors of clowns on campus. Of course we at EC need to jump on this ridiculous bandwagon. WELL GET OFF.

I have chosen not to get anxious when walking around campus alone. It’s not worth giving into the hype; I have better and more important things on my mind. Here on campus, the perpetrator would probably be a student (that I know) or one of those rebel-middle schoolers who likes to hang out in the parking lots. I almost wish I could catch up with a clown here. Just so I can call him out for his attention-seeking behavior. But that would also be counter-productive since I would be giving the clown special attention. My opinion, don’t say or do anything more about this phenomenon and it will just go away on its own.

The “clowns” are just that… Clowns. They are people who find it funny to scare people. Believe me, I love scaring people around Halloween too, but you won’t find me in a clown costume this Halloween. If anyone does dress as a clown, they may be in for a world of hurt. There have been “clown hunts” which are just disasters waiting to happen since someone is bound to take it way too far. The clown panic is going to leave as fast as it came. That’s just how these panics go. The more ridiculous it is, the quicker people forget about it.
