Twenty-five-year-old Yordano “Ace” Ventura was killed in a car accident in the Dominican Republic on Sunday. He was a pitcher for the Kansas City Royals and had helped them earn their first World Series win in 2014 after a 30 year losing streak. His team nickname was “Ace”, referencing his last name’s similarity to that in the Jim Carrey movie Ace Ventura. At Kansas City, Ventura had started nine post-season games, including the 2014 World Series against the San Francisco Giants. In his career, Ventura played 94 games and hit 54 home runs. Ventura was known for having an exceptional fastball, but it was countered by his lack of anger management. Last season, he was suspended nine games for intentionally throwing pitches at Orioles’ third-baseman Manny Machado. In Ventura’s last game in Major League Baseball (MLB), he had been honoring the late Jose Fernandez and Oscar Taveras on his cap. Fernandez had played for the Miami Marlins and was tragically killed earlier this year in a boating accident; Taveras had played for the St. Louis Cardinals before dying in an alcohol-related car accident in the Dominican Republic in 2014.

At the same time, in an unfortunate coincidence, former Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, and Arizona Diamondbacks’ third-baseman Andy Marte, 33, also died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic on Sunday morning. This was not the same accident, but it happened the same day in the same country. Just to add to the uncanny coincidence, noted by USA Today, the late Marte struck out in his final major league game of his career against the late Ventura in 2014.
